Collie, the Herding Dog

If you are familiar with that dog “Lassie” from the popular TV series of the olden days, then that is the dog collie. Of course, not every collie can be as strong and awesome as the famous “Lassie” but you will find out that this dog breed can be a great family pet dog.
Amiable yet Strongly Protective
While the dog is an amiable type, it still is wary and even hostile to complete strangers. Barking at people it has not met before or even other animals is common for a collie.

When it comes to training the dog, it is quite stubborn, especially if you intend to give pet obedience training to a young cute puppy (see typical collie puppy on the side picture). If you can handle it (which is likely especially if you have no ample pet training experience), then it is advisable to have your dog attend professional obedience training sessions.
Herding Dog Breed
The collie were used then to herd flocks of sheep, so it has developed a protective instinct – making it a perfect family pet, which is fine as the dog is very strong and energetic. When it comes to its appearance, it possesses blue or brown eyes shaped like almonds. The collie’s ears are almost erect, giving a look of being alert and even attractive. Its coat on the other hand is either smooth or rough, with the latter being fuller and much longer.
The collie belongs to the herding group of dogs, that’s why it loves to be in the company of its master and family. However, if you live in a limited space, you should think twice about getting this dog as it needs to have ample space to run around and enjoy.
