Having My Own Pet Fish and Aquarium
You chanced upon the aquarium of a friend, and you were simply amazed with its presentation as well as the colorful variety of pet fish swimming over, under and around the rocks and sea weeds as well as the small figurines decorating the aquarium.
Immediately, you want to take care of your own pet fish as well. Okay, having some tropical fish as pet can be a very exciting and even therapeutic hobby for anyone. But first of all, you have to decide on which pet tropical fish you would want to have.
When I was small, I just love to have black mollies, if only because they are easy to reproduce. I would be surprised one morning that my fish tank was filled with tiny young black mollies. I was just disappointed to know that black mollies eat their young – I knew when their number grew less as days went by. I had to save the rest by separating them to another tank.
I also like orange swordtail fish as pets, because they are what I call hardy fish. I just love their strong color, and what’s great is that they do not need much caring. Although I have a few who jumped out of the fish aquarium so better make sure the have the glass cover always on top of your fish tank.
Another popular tropical fish as pet is the angel fish. What’s amazing about angelfish is that they mind their own business – and does not attempt to eat young fish. They are very easy to care for, and are fast in growing up. Did you know that angelfish can grow up to the size of your hand?

Of course, do would not consider the goldfish as pets? The fact is that goldfish is first species thought of when one talks about tropical fish and aquarium. A rather hardy fish, the goldfish is very easy to care as pet fish, although it should be noted that sudden water temperature changes can be harmful, and can even kill it. However, so long as the water temperature is maintained, the goldfish can tolerate any temperature, even an unheated fish tank.
Also, one might think that goldfish in a fishbowl is just fine, as this is a very popular image. But then, it has been discovered that fishbowls are unsuitable for goldfish, or any other tropical fish for that matter. Lack of oxygen support, stunting of growth and ammonia poisoning are some reasons for the frowning of the use of fishbowl when wanting to care for fish.
As a beginner pet fish owner, get a small-sized fish tank the first time – perhaps a five or ten-gallon tank will do. Do no attempt to overstock your aquarium to ensure enough space for your fish to move about and grow. Go for some expert advice – perhaps the tropical fish store owner – to know the appropriate number of fish that’s best for a particular size of aquarium. It’s best to ask him questions on other tropical fish and aquarium concerns so as to assure a good maintenance of healthy pet fish and aquarium.
